Going Up…

This morning when I was posting my daily gratitude on Facebook…I was Jane Carrolllooking for an ‘E’ word…as I’ve started doing the alphabet…anyway…as I contemplated which word to use…elephant…eel…earrings…everythingBertha…whispered…elevators…in my ear…with the explanation…that… sometimes there are just too many steps to take

Of course…she is relating this to my life…although…not in the way I could first interrupt it…not…taking the shortcuts and trying to get to the top sooner…no…she’s reminding me…that…I don’t always have to take the hard road…I don’t always have to struggle…in fact…I never do…

She reminds me of my spiritual practices…prayer…appreciation…affirmation… contemplation…meditation…forgiveness…saying that they form the elevator of my life…

Hmmm…guess I won’t be taking the stairs…after all…

To Shop or Not to Shop…

There are controversies floating around…and…normally I try to stay out of Jane Carrollthem…because…I realize that there…generally…is validity to both sides…

So…as I sit here…fingers on keyboard…I’m contemplating…do I really want take part…and…the answer is…no…and…yes…

However…Bertha…seems to want to add her perspective…and…she usually gets what she wants…so…here goes…

I have worked more Holidays than I care to remember…as a nurse…it was never optional…just an accepted fact…someone had to cover those shifts… and a good portion of the time…it was…me…

And…nursing wasn’t the only profession called into Holiday service… police… firefighters…EMTs…all don their uniforms to make our world a safer place…

But…that’s not all…there are hotel workers…service station attendants…utility workers…restaurant staff…radio and television staff…all called upon to take care of the needs of the public at large…

And…while…I would give all of these people a day off…if it were left up to me…I know that it is impossible…

So…it brings us to the controversy…should stores open on Thanksgiving night…and…if they do…should I boycott…and stay home…

You can probably already tell…I have mixed feelings…if it’s a moral issue… does the local department store worker have a stronger…right…to be at home with their family…than…the firefighter who is poised and ready for the alarm which signifies one more deep-fried turkey going up in flames…

And…in a less than bustling economy…is it wrong to entice shoppers in on a day when most are off work…

Which brings us full circle…if no one is off work…who will celebrate…who will shop…

For this…even…Bertha…doesn’t have the answer…I will say that last year…I participated in some Thursday Night Madness…along with Mama…and several other family women-folk…

Have we started a new family tradition…not by a long shot…I really don’t enjoy the crowds…and…don’t plan to shop on Black Friday…either…but… I’m not opposed to having the option…

Jane…

Will you be shopping on Thanksgiving? I loved to hear in the comments.
