Enjoying the Ride…

Yesterday…I started the morning with a bike ride…just a few miles in…I found myself…struggling a bit…wanting to quit…then…pushing myself…rather harshly…to continue…for at least ten miles…

As I was struggling and chiding myself…I remembered that just last year…Bertha…had encouraged me…to make…enjoying the ride…to be my only goal for riding…

Hmmm…

I was just about to turn towards home…when…Bertha…popped in…with a twist on her former advice…

Seems as though…sometimes…I enjoy pushing myself out of my comfort zone…sometimes…it feels good to push my limits and do things that make me a little uncomfortable…she reminds me of the hill that loomed before me when I first started riding…I rode to it and turned around for a couple of months…then…one day…I pushed myself to the top…yes…it was a struggle…yes…I was out of breath and noodle-legged…but…it felt…incredibly good…I definitely enjoyed the ride that day…and my riding world…and maybe my whole world…opened up as a result of that accomplishment…

With that in mind…I asked myself…which would I truly enjoy…and…riding ten miles…won by a landslide…I didn’t try to break any speed records…I didn’t climb any mountains…in fact…I found a shady route and circled it a few times…but…I made my ten miles…and…then some…

And most importantly…I enjoyed the ride…

The Dogs Have It…

Yesterday…was National Dog Day…of course…I didn’t realize it…until after the blog was written…but…Bertha…is chattering on about it this morning…

Reminding me…of…my different relationships with dogs over the years…how some have been my…loyal and loving friends…more soul mates than anything else…and…how…others…have frightened me…threatened me…especially when I ride my bike in unfamiliar territory

Bertha…says…dogs aren’t inherently one way or the other…it depends on the situation…she reminds me…that the dog who was so determined…to…take me down…when I innocently rode my bike past its house…was warm and loving to the children in the family…

In fact…she said…it’s a lot like my life…there’s not a lot of…black and white…but more like…innumerable shades of gray…and…quite often…just like with dogs…it’s all in how I approach a situation…that makes the difference…coming in…humbly…with a smile and a calm voice…and…maybe a treat…goes a long way…

Hmmm…
