It’s All Related…

Yesterday…we sponsored a blood drive at school…I decided to roll up my sleeve to give the gift of life…only to discover that…they no longer want my blood…

There was a question…not sure if it’s new or if I’ve never noticed it before…that asked if I had ever had a Dura Mater Graft…and…unfortunately I did have one when I had brain surgery three years ago for Chiari I Malformation

Interestingly…Chiari…and the surgery have changed my life in many ways…but…I in no way ever considered that it would prevent me from giving blood again…although…I do understand the rationale when I think about it…

Bertha…comforted me by reminding me of how seemingly unrelated things…affect other things…in strange and unusual ways…in this giant puzzle that is my life…

Hmmm…something to contemplate…

PS…my graft was derived from bovine heart tissue…

Emergency Walk…

Three years ago this month…I had brain surgery for Chiari I Malformation…it had been an usual winter in the south…and…we had a large snow that wouldn’t go away…school was closed the entire week before my surgery…thankfully…the roads were clear enough for me to make it to Birmingham for the operation…I didn’t want it to be canceled due to weather

This week…a freakish snow and ice storm hit Birmingham…pretty much paralyzing the entire city…motorist were stranded for hours…many overnight…children spent the night at schools because their parents couldn’t reach them…neighbors helped neighbor…strangers helped strangers…

And…

My neurosurgeon…Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw…walked six miles…to preform emergency brain surgery…

Although…I already had total respect for him…how can you not respect someone who held your brain in his hands…I am blown out of the water by his dedication and determination…
