Enjoying the Ride…

Yesterday…I started the morning with a bike ride…just a few miles in…I found myself…struggling a bit…wanting to quit…then…pushing myself…rather harshly…to continue…for at least ten miles…

As I was struggling and chiding myself…I remembered that just last year…Bertha…had encouraged me…to make…enjoying the ride…to be my only goal for riding…

Hmmm…

I was just about to turn towards home…when…Bertha…popped in…with a twist on her former advice…

Seems as though…sometimes…I enjoy pushing myself out of my comfort zone…sometimes…it feels good to push my limits and do things that make me a little uncomfortable…she reminds me of the hill that loomed before me when I first started riding…I rode to it and turned around for a couple of months…then…one day…I pushed myself to the top…yes…it was a struggle…yes…I was out of breath and noodle-legged…but…it felt…incredibly good…I definitely enjoyed the ride that day…and my riding world…and maybe my whole world…opened up as a result of that accomplishment…

With that in mind…I asked myself…which would I truly enjoy…and…riding ten miles…won by a landslide…I didn’t try to break any speed records…I didn’t climb any mountains…in fact…I found a shady route and circled it a few times…but…I made my ten miles…and…then some…

And most importantly…I enjoyed the ride…

Bertha Let the Dogs Out…

I know I’ve blogged about…bikes…and…dogs…before…they just don’t mix…at least…not when you’re the one…pedaling the bike…in fact…a canine welcoming party…is rarely…a…welcoming…sight…

When I first started riding…my tendency was…to pedal as quickly as I could when I saw a dog…what I found was…the faster I pedaled…the faster they ran…and…the more they…snaked around my bike…putting me in danger of a crash…

One day…Bertha…decided to ride sidecar with me…just as I started to speed up…at the sight of a dog ahead…she said…

Slow down

Huh…

So…she repeated…slow down

She went on to explain…the dogs were playing a game…like chasing a car…they don’t chase cars that are sitting still…they only chase them when they are moving…and…it’s the same with a cyclist…the faster they ride…the more of a challenge it is for the dog…

Well…I tried it…I slowed down…it helped that the dog didn’t look vicious…just interested…and…sure enough…it greeted me…trotted along for a few feet…then went on about its business…

I’ve tried it numerous times since then…always with the same results…

Bertha…was pleased that I took her advice…but…of course she said…it reminded her of my life…

That’s right…she says it’s the same concept as…when I try to outrun problems…they just seem to run all the faster to catch up with me…and often…take me out…in the process…

But…when…I slow down…take my time…think things through…allow them to…run their course…they usually do…

Hmmm…

I think she’s on to something…
