Cutting the Grass…

Jane CarrollYesterday…I cut the grass…for the first time in over four years…well…now don’t get excited…the grass has been cut…it just wasn’t me doing it…and…to be honest…I liked it that way…I liked writing a check once a month…and coming home to a neat lawn…without any effort on my part…

So…when I made the decision…in a cost saving measure…to start pushing my own mower…I wasn’t real happy about it…in fact…I was pretty bummed…

Until…Bertha…whispered…it was just a choice I made…

She reminded me that…I was dealing with XYZ dollars a month…and…I got to choose how I spend that…for lawn service…something I could do myself…or…something else…

I simply chose…something else…

She said…it’s always that way…when I say yes to one thing…I’m saying no to something else…and…vice versa…the trick is to do it consciously…to be aware that it is a choice…that takes away the feelings of being a victim…makes me empowered instead…

Well…I have to say…her little pep talk did help…I became un-bummed…and just tackled the grass…honestly…I have a tiny yard…it only took a few minutes…and I did feel totally empowered when I was done…

And then…I remembered the sense of satisfaction I’d gotten when I  mowed myself…not to mention a pretty good workout…and…all bumminess was gone…

Jane…

Yes and No…

My sweet daughters got me a new set of cookware for Mother’s Day and my upcoming birthday…and…as good as it looked sitting on the dining room table…I knew the time would come…when I had to put it away…

This weekend…was the time…it really wasn’t such a big job…but…it required…purging…the cabinet of that cookware I no longer used…including the set of avocado green Club Aluminum I got for my 18th birthday…

Funny…that was hard to do…even though I haven’t used it in the five years I’ve lived in this house…I’ve had it my entire adult life…it went to college with me…it went to my first house with me…and every house since…

Anyway…before I work myself into a panic and rescue it from the garage sale stash…I’ll move on…

So…it wasn’t such a big job…I was pleased with the results…I’m anxious to use the new cookware…and…I thought that was that…

But…oh…no…Bertha…got involved…saying that it all reminded her of my life…that…every time I say…yes…to something…I say…no…to something else…

Huh…

She said that when I said yes to the new cookware…I said no to the old…she went on to use the example of buying groceries…when I say yes to going to the grocery store…I’m saying no to staying home and watching TV…and of course…vice versa…

She continued with lots of examples…I won’t bore you with all of them…but her main point was…that every yes has a no…and…every no has a yes

Hmmm…
