More Isn’t Always Better…

Too much of any one thing…even if it’s your favorite…can ruin a dish! ~Bertha

Jane CarrollOnce upon a time…when Mama was a young girl…she wanted to make cornbread…Granny told her how to make it…including how much baking soda to put in…but…Mama…being…Mama…and…a child…thought that there was no way that tiny amount of soda would be enough…besides…if a little bit was good…more was better…so…she added more…a lot more

The result…green cornbread…that was barely edible…well honestly…it probably wasn’t edible…but she has always been grateful for a guest in their home who actually ate it that night and didn’t complain or make fun of her…

Now…just let me say for the record…Mama makes the best cornbread around now…never green…not even on St. Patrick’s Day…

But…Bertha…says it proves her point completely…recipes…like lives…need to be balanced…she reminds me that…I need to play…but not all the time…I need to sleep…but not all the time…I need to work…but not all the time…I need to clean house…well…you get the point…

Of course…Bertha…says finding that balance is part of living my truth… knowing what I need…and in what amounts…and doing it…

Life is a Crock…Pot…That is…

This morning…I rolled out…dark and early…so I would have plenty of time…to get all dolled up…for…picture day at school…and…still cook dinner…

I love the fact…that I can literally cook dinner…in the comfort of my pajamas…using none other than my trusty slow cooker…AKA…Crock Pot…so this morning…I started what will be a barbequed roast…when I get home this afternoon…then…all I will have to do…is cook a couple of veggies…and voila…dinner is born…

Bertha…decided to get her two cents worth in…as I cooked…saying…that this meal…the roast…and veggies…reminded her of my life…

Huh…maybe I wasn’t hearing clearly so early in the morning…but…how could a pot roast remind her of my life…

Of course she was eager to explain…reminding me…that some things in life…are better…when…I allow them…to cook slowly…like the roast…let them develop over time…don’t rush them…and…some things…like the veggies…are better…when…I cook them quickly…just jump in…and…get ‘em done…

She went on to chide me…for…wanting to rush things…for wanting everything…now…she said…it’s like mashed potatoes…I might like the convenience of instant…but I sure don’t like the results…

Hmmm…I guess…I’m slowing down today…letting things happen at their own pace…and…maybe…peeling a few potatoes to go with that roast…

PS…I’m sure we’ll talk more about…speeding up…in the near future…she wouldn’t let me off that easily…
