Players…

For several years…I’ve had a little gadget on my desk…the base is a magnet…and it had ten little metal men…which are clips…that could be arranged in multiple ways…I’m sure it’s meant to be…a…stress reliever…

At first…I kept it over to the side…accessible only to me…and…every so often…but not very…I would play with them…

Until…

One day…I moved it to the other side of the desk…and…very interested children…started to play with it…and…what I noticed was…it kept their attention…as they were waiting for medicine…or a band aid…they were totally mesmerized…by the magnet…and…the ten little men…

And…then…just like the…little Indian song…there were…nine…and…eight…and…seven…

Until…there were…six…

A student recently observed…that someone had been…stealing…my little men…as she played with them…between inhaler puffs…implying that I should do something…to…prevent it from happening…

Thankfully…Bertha…had gone to work with me that day…and…she explained…that…yes…having the little men accessible…put them at risk…but…that when they were out of harm’s way…so to speak…there was…no pleasure…no one enjoyed them…and…that it was worth the risk…of losing them…for all the pleasure they brought…

Her answer seemed to satisfy the student…who returned to class…leaving me to…contemplate…the message…thatBertha…was actually giving me…

And…it came out as this…

Sometimes in life…playing it safe…isn’t playing…at all…

Hmmm…

The Brightest Crayon…

Okay…I admit it…I’m not always the brightest crayon in the box…or maybe…it’s just that sometimes I don’t get out of the box…case in point…my friends Tamy Burns and Kimberly Hughes…authors of…Fateful Night…a novel based on the premise that Marilyn Monroe didn’t die…announced a contest…in honor of Marilyn’s birthday…for the month of August…

It was pretty straight forward…all you had to do was make a comment on a blog post containing your favorite Marilyn quote…I’d seen some of the prizes…they’re pretty cool…I could enter…except…I don’t know any Marilyn quotes…oh well…a prize would have been nice…but…not to be…

I was going to leave it at that…until…Bertha…reminded me…after I went to bed last night…that…I could Google…how could I have forgotten that…so much for good night’s sleep…

First thing this morning…I Googled…and quickly found my favorite quote…actually…Bertha…picked it out…

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” ~Marilyn Monroe

I copied and pasted it into the comment section…I may not win…but…at least I have a chance…which is the lesson that…Bertha…was reminding me of…we wrote about it first in a story from…Bertha-Size Your Life!…called…Lottery…when…Bertha…explained the difference between…being lucky and having a chance…

Seems as though…I can’t win the lottery if I don’t have a ticket…can’t win a contest if I haven’t entered…can’t be hired for my dream job if I don’t apply…and…the list goes on and on…

Okay…enough blogging for today…this little crayon is getting out of the box…
