Mistaken for Granted…

A writer friend of mine recently posed a question on Facebook…why is it that strangers see your worth…and…appreciate you…but…your own family continues to take you for granted…

Well…Bertha…immediately jumped all over that one…but not the way that I had…imagined…even hoped…she would…yes…I thought she would bemoan…how under loved and underappreciated I am

Instead…she turned the question around…asking me…if my family and friends would ask the same question about me…

What…well…uh…no…of course they wouldn’t…

But…honestly…sometimes…they would…

Sometimes…I get so busy and tangled up in my life…that…I don’t truly appreciate everything that I should…or…that’s not quite true…I appreciate it…I just don’t get around to expressing it…and…for some reason…I just…assume…that they know…that it is somehow understood

Bertha…laughed…and assured me that the…assume…rule definitely applies here…she…also reminds me…that everyone…needs three things…

To be loved…to be heard…to be understood

And…that part of being loved is being acknowledged…and…she challenges me…to love…to hear…to understand…and…to acknowledge…today

Hmmm…I think I have a bit of work to do today…and…for days to come…

The Rules Haven’t Changed…

This morning my five year-old granddaughter…said…I remember everything…I don’t know why…but I do…and…all was well…

Until…

She went out onto the balcony…and proceeded to climb into a tall chair by the railing…my daughter…reminded her of the…rule…no climbing in tall chairs by the railing…it was the same rule we had last summer at the beach…didn’t she remember…

No…

But…what about…the statement she’d just made about…remembering everything…

Comment…

Well…I do…except for that

After a good chuckle…Bertha…said that it reminded her of my life…of course it did…but…why…

Well…she says that little acorn didn’t fall far from the…Grammy Oak…because I tend to only remember what I want to as well…

She did go on to say…that is not necessarily a bad thing…I just need to be more selective about what I want to remember…

Hmmm…wonder if I’ll remember that little tidbit…
