Ms. Green Jeans…

Every so often…Bertha…gets a wild hair…and a green thumb…I know…sounds weird and I have recommended that she see a doctor but she just rolls her eyesonly adding to my concern…that she has some exotic condition

Anyway…all jokes aside…Bertha…is naturally concerned about the quality of our food…and looks for opportunities for me to do my part in supporting…healthy…local…food sources…of course…there is Mama’s garden…and that’s a biggie…there’s also the local Farmer’s Market…and my good friend Bea Kunz’s organic herb farm…Sage Hill Farms and Vintage Store

This spring…Bertha’s…excited and insisting that we participate in Bea’s latest project…which combines her passion for organic gardening with her passion for children and teaching…she has started an organic gardening project at Curry Middle School in Jasper, Alabama…now…thankfully…I’m not available for digging the beds…so instead we have joined an event called…Author’s for Healthy Living…this event is the brainchild of another good friend of mine…Kim Emerson…and takes place…Saturday…April 27, 2013…on Facebook

During the event…several authors will be offering a percentage of all books sold for the day to the Curry Middle School project…

I see it as a total…win-win…you get some great books…maybe win a prize or two…and…get to do your part to teach the next generation about organic gardening…without raising a shovel…what could be better than that…

Well…Bertha…just mentioned that you might be busy on Saturday…so she insists that we give a portion of all Bertha’s sold for the rest of the week to Bea’s work…and I agree completely…I think that’s twice this week I’ve agreed with her…scary…

It’s a Gift…

Bertha…is talking to me this morning about taking gifts for granted…I argued…I’m always grateful for gifts…profusely thank the giver…savor them in my heart…but…she insists…that I get gifts many times each day…that I totally take for granted…

Smiles…

I must admit…I furrowed my brow a bit at that one…how can smiles be gifts…and…if they are…could it simplify my Christmas list next year

Of course…she was more than happy to explain…when someone smiles at me…it is a true gift…they are putting aside their concerns…their worries…their physical discomfort…possibly even their fear of rejection…and giving me a smile…to say hello…to brighten my day…to bring me comfort…to make me feel accepted…to make me feel better about myself…

Wow…I’ve never thought of a smile that way…but…she’s right…it is a gift…and…while I probably won’t send a thank you note for each one…at least for today…I’m going to savor them in my heart…for the gift that they are…and…I may even give a few extra ones myself…
