The High Cost of Light Bulbs…Or Not…

IMG_6039-2 copySometimes…I amaze myself…or…disamaze myself…as the case may be. Recently…all the spotlights in the kitchen went out…and because I was concerned at the cost of replacing them…visions of hundred-dollar bulbs danced through my head…I popped in regular lightbulbs. Well…you might guess…these didn’t last very long…and they didn’t put out as much light. So…last week…I bit the bullet…I grabbed my life savings…and went to the hardware store…carrying a bulb along for reference.

I was pleasantly surprised…to find the bulbs were cheap…so cheap in fact…that I bought extras…so that in five years when it happens again…I’d be prepared.

Bertha…laughed at me…of course she did…who wouldn’t…I had fretted… worried…spent a few months in a dimly lit kitchen…and wasted some regular 60 watt bulbs…because I was certain that it would cost too much to replace them…instead…of…checking to see how much they cost.

She reminded me that I could have called the hardware store to see how much they cost…I could have Googled them if I was too timid to call…but instead…I just assumed

And…we all know what that got me…

I tried to argue with her…they were so big…they were so pretty…they were so bright…they had to be expensive…what was the point in checking when my budget was challenged…

She wouldn’t have it…saying that it was like a lot of other things in life…when I assumed things would be a certain way…so I didn’t even try…holding myself back in the process…

I hate when she’s right…but she is…I have been guilty of doing that…but mostly…now…I don’t do that anymore…and…then…a light bulb shoots…

Busted!

Bad Dung Shui…

For the past several months…a bird or birds…have taken to roosting above the column of my tiny front porch…actually…it’s more of a stoop than a porch…not even room for a chair…but…I digress…

Anyway…said bird(s)…have been leaving behind…some…foul fowl droppings…

I first noticed the problem during the late winter…the hose was still disconnected to prevent freezing…so…I carried hot water outside…poured it over the post and used the outside broom to scrub it clean…I was pretty proud of myself…

Only to find bird droppings a week or so later when I went out the front door…I don’t use it often…I assumed that I had missed a spot…and I waited a few days until it was warm enough to connect the hose…I blasted it…making sure this time that I got it all…

Only to find bird droppings a week or so later when I went out the front door…

Hmmm…

By this time…Bertha…is laughing her head off at me…how…could I possibly think that cleaning up the evidence…was gonna stop the problem…

I dunno…it seemed like a good idea at the time…

Of course…she then says it reminds her of my life…of the times when I cleaned up mess after mess…without actually solving the problem…always surprised when it happened again…

Guilty as charged…definitely something to contemplate…but…first I have bigger fish to fry…like…a bird in the bush…beats…two on the porch…

PS…I won’t even go into all that…Bertha…said about the feng shui of having poop on my stoop…best left for another blog…
