In keeping with the theme of the blog hopā¦Berthaā¦asked meā¦what is my sign that Spring has sprungā¦
For meā¦Spring officially arrives when theā¦buttercupsā¦bloomā¦nowā¦most people call themā¦daffodilsā¦but for some reasonā¦in my little corner of the worldā¦weāve always called themā¦buttercupsā¦andā¦since Iām an old dogā¦I donāt intend to call them anything elseā¦besidesā¦they were my Grannyās favorite flowerā¦and it just wouldnāt seem fair to her memory to correctĀ their name nowā¦
Anywayā¦what I love about buttercupsā¦is that they bloom while it is still winterā¦sometimes early enough that Punxsutawney Phil picks a bouquet while he looking for his shadowā¦they are like a personal promise to meā¦that Spring is really comingā¦
The funny thing isā¦once the buttercups bloomā¦we can usually count on a snowā¦often the only one of the seasonā¦this year was no exceptionā¦as buttercups all over the county found themselves peeking out of ten inches of the white fluffy stuffā¦followed by a few days of icingā¦
Luckilyā¦buttercups are very resilient and generallyā¦take a snowing and keep on growingā¦looking just as lovely after the snow and ice as beforeā¦
Nowā¦Berthaā¦says that buttercups remind her of life dreamsā¦
Berthaā¦says that like with buttercupsā¦we plant the bulbs for our dreamsā¦and sometimesā¦they start to show upā¦before we expect themā¦and then⦠something comes alongā¦like a big snowā¦and they are totally obscured from our visionā¦butā¦instead of being patient and waiting for the inevitable thawā¦we think all is lostā¦and move onā¦never going back to pick the lovely bouquet that is just waiting for usā¦
Hmmmā¦from now onā¦when I visualize my dreamsā¦I think Iāll see them surrounded by a field of buttercupsā¦it couldnāt hurtā¦
Janeā¦

You and Bertha are so funny! But, yes, buttercups describes those flowers perfectly!
Well…there you have it…I’m glad you agree Jennifer. Thanks for visiting and I hope you’ll visit the other blogs on the hop!
Over here we call them daffodils, or daffs for short. One time, when my Mother-in-Law was still alive, GM was talking to her on the phone and told her that he had seen a load of daffs in the middle of a roundabout, she mis-heard him, thought he had said dust, so now we say to each other “we know it’s spring because the dust comes out”
That is so funny, Joy…like your Daisy Row story…GM must have a delightful sense of humor…just like you! So now…I’ll count ‘dust’ as one of my favorite things of Spring.
What A Great Visual! š Thank You Jane And Bertha!!
Thanks Tamy…happy Spring to you and Digby…I know he’s enjoying the weather!
Oh, He Is! He Sends Woods And Wags To You Both!
Oh…love that pup! Sending him an ear scratch. š
Buttercups it is! Your Granny would be proud. š I don’t get to enjoy them where I live, but think of them, along with the crocus, snowdrops and others from my time living away from here. They heralded spring – their little green tips popping through the top of the snow and finally blooming their bright ‘welcome to a fresh start’ colorful blooms. If life dreams are surrounded by buttercups, you can’t go wrong! Love it, Jane.
Yes…that’s just how I feel about them Jacqueline…and the other thing I love about buttercups…is that unlike the fancier varieties which we do call daffodils or jonquils or paper whites…buttercups were dug from yards and shared with neighbors…children…grandchildren…and they are so hardy that they still come back…years after the houses are gone.
Okay Buttercup š You and Bertha are wonderful, Jane!!
LOL…Christy…you’re pretty wonderful yourself! Have a wonderful Spring!
You and Bertha are both a Buttercup! Always keep what Grandma taught. If she told you it was a Buttercup, then it is for eternity. We must remember that not only did “Mama know best” about flowers, so did Grandma! Happy Spring, Jane and Bertha!
Oh, Mary…you are right…never go against Granny’s advice…or wisdom…or buttercup naming! Have a wonderful spring and cook up some tasty treats!
Buttercups it is. I always adore Bertha’s wisdom!
Thank you Lauri…you’re a doll!
I love Bertha! š
I also love “buttercups” which I’ve never heard called that before. Buttercups for my family are the little tiny yellow weeds that grow wild in unattended fields.
But I have all kinds of bulbs in my yard, daffodils, crocus, and tulips. Not only because they are pretty, and hardy, but because I’m too lazy to plant every year, and these guys just come back on their own, they are so faithful lol.
Thanks Laci…I’m with you…love the ease of bulbs…returning year after year…they are a faithful lot!
Thank you everyone who visited our Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring post and especially those of you who left a comment.
I’m excited to announce that Jacqueline Cross is the winner of a copy of Becoming Bertha.
Congratulations, Jackie!
