Yesterday morning…after posting the blog…I realized…that it was exactly forty years…since I graduated from high school…yes…I know…I have a thing for dates…I remember some of the most obscure dates…you’d ever want to forget…but…I’m digressing…

Interestingly…it doesn’t seem like forty years…how could it be…many days…I don’t even feel forty…sometimes when I’m looking in the mirror…I don’t see the gray hair…sagging eyes…puffy checks…and those few well chiseled wrinkles…I see that girl of seventeen…

I see her donning that white-on-white polyester knit dress…with the gold buttons on the waistband…and those chunky white sandals…and…the required pantyhose…even though the auditorium was probably 200 degrees…and…slipping into…that gown…made out of what looked like lining material…and securing the cap on her head with white bobby pins…

It was a long time ago…and…yet…I remember…my outfit in great detail…what I don’t remember…is…the speech that I made…that’s right…I don’t remember one word of it

Now…you might ask…how can you remember…the date…precisely what you wore…and…not remember a word of your speech…

I’d have to answer…I don’t have a clue…dates…and clothes…that’s what I remember…that’s just how I process things…

And…honestly…when I’m reminiscing…about that day gone by…when…I…see…that young girl, in the white dress…and…in my mind…I can almost hear…her saying…something to the effect of…my fellow classmates…in forty years…we’ll look back on this night…and…remember…exactly what we were wearing…and…we’ll know…nothing else…really mattered…for…it’s truly what we do that makes us who we are…not what we say…

We’re talking about having a reunion…hmmm…I wonder what I will wear…
