For the last several days…I’ve been noticing the pretty little yellow flowers growing on the empty lot next door…AKA…dandelions…now…I know…dandelions get a bad rap…I’ve been known to rant at a few myself when they move on my side of the property line…
But…for all of my adult sensibility of a weed-free lawn…never gonna happen at my house…there’s something about a fluffy dandelion puffball…that I can’t resist…
I have to…make a wish…and…BLOW…
I’ve been watching the little crop next door…wondering when I could start…wishing…so…this morning…I was shocked to see…no yellow blooms when I stepped on the porch to welcome the day…
Now…I knew they hadn’t been mowed…or dug…so…what happened to them…well…a quick Google search revealed…that they close at night…something about preserving their nectar when the bugs weren’t around to pollinate…and surely enough…they are all back this morning…
I was a bit surprised…how could I never have known that…I mean…I’ve seen a lot of dandies in my lifetime…how could I have missed that they close at night…
Bertha…was all too happy jump in with the answer…because…I’d never paid attention…I just either saw them or didn’t without giving it a second thought…
She says the same thing applies to other areas of my life…reminding me of driving down a familiar road…and seeing a house that I’ve never noticed before…making friends with someone I’ve supposedly known all my life but never realized how much we had in common…
She says that while…sometimes it’s about being distracted and unaware…quite often it’s about timing…
So…I guess the timing was just right this morning…for me to learn more about dandelions…and friendships…oh…look…there’s a puffball…think I’ll go make a wish…
Jane…
What about you…do you make dandelion wishes? Let me know in the comments. And while you’re there…I invite you to click the little box to sign up for the newsletter.
I’m making a wish too and I hope both of ours come true, sweetie!
Oh…I know they will Christy…I know they will!
“Dandelion, Dandelion, yellow as gold, what do you do all day?”
“I just wait here in the tall green grass ’til the children come to play.”
“Dandelion dandelion yellow as gold, what do you do all night?”
“I wait and wait while the cool dew falls and my hair turns long and white.”
“And what do you do when your hair grows white and the children come to play?”
“They take me in their dimpled hands and blow my hair away!”

Oh…I love that Paula…thank you for sharing it. It makes me think of the Giving Tree somehow. How patient of that dandelion to wait for us to blow her hair away. 😉
Dandelions have a lot to offer us physically and spiritually. Reading your post brought a memory of one of the last times I had an outing with my dad. As we were returning to the car from a visit to the post office my father bent and picked one of the fragile puffballs in the lawn. His movement of entering the car caused seed ball to shatter.
My dad turned to me and said; “Its all gone.” I responded that it wasn’t gone it was all over the inside of the car.
A year later when I stood at my fathers gravesite leading his memorial service, I told this story while passing a puffball to each of my brothers. We blew on them together, knowing that Dad was not gone he was just different .
Malana,
That is such a touching story. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. Now I will think of you and your precious Dad when I blow on a puffball.
And Jane, every time I see one I will smile with the memory that we are connected. <3
Oh…and I’m smiling now. I love our connection. 😉
Excellent post… I would never think of dandelions the same way now…
And… you are right, If it is meant to happen it will. Timing is the key!.
Love and all my best wishes, dear Jane. Aquileana 😀
Hello Aquileana…so nice to hear from you. Yes…timing is everything…it always has been. 😉 Love and best wishes and Dandy Puffballs to you!
