I remember as a girl…how I longed to have an outfit from the…Faye Lee Shop…and…no…it wasn’t some fancy New York store…but…it was the only clothing store in my small town…that exclusively sold…ladies fashions…my mother and older sisters got clothes from there…and…I wanted to be grownup enough to as well…I think I was in seventh grade when I was ushered into the society of sophisticated fashion…with a matching yellow and white…skirt and top…a huge Rite of Passage…
There have been so many since then…first kiss…grandchildren…and a lot of things in between…
But…none of them stick out in my mind today…as much as that first outfit from the Faye Lee…that first declaration to the world…that I was an adult…at least in my mind…and clothing size…
As…many of you know…I recently returned to my maiden name…the same name that I used when I first shopped at the Faye Lee Shop…somehow…it feels like a full circle of sorts…because that’s exactly what it is…
Bertha…says it’s the blending of the three stages a woman passes through during her life…maiden…mother…crone…and although I don’t like the word crone so much…I know she’s right…that’s exactly who I am now…
I just hope I have tempered the wisdom of a woman with the naivety of that young girl…
Jane
Jane, I love this post. I am proud to be your crone-y.
Love it, Peggy! Glad to be a crone-y with you as well!
Jane, I do not know what to say to you first, I really enjoyed this article, which brought back wonderful memories, or flog you for calling us crones!!! lol It is so ironic that I am reading this article now, I have been suffering and depressed with being old(because that is how I view myself) and I so desperately, do not want to feel this way! Now, I read this article and discover that you have now labeled us “CRONES”! You know this is a horrible word and so does Bertha! I have discovered, as you have, that we have come full circle, which appears to mean–most of the good things in life we enjoyed, are no longer available to us–what a shame. But I refuse to use the word “crone”, and you should as well, no matter what Bertha tells you! I much prefer, “the overweight hot-mama”! Sounds much better, puts new life in our maiden names(which I think are the best)! In general, mind over matter sweetheart! From one “hot mama” to another, “you and need a change of attitude, therefore, we are no longer “crones”! Tell Bertha, that word does not describe you and never to use it again! lol, but true! Keep writing girlfriend, love reading what you have to say, ‘HOT MAMA!”
Tammy…I adore you…please don’t flog me! LOL! I don’t consider crone to be a negative term anymore…just a term that means a wise woman…so…while I’m not offended by it…I can definitely agree with…HOT MAMA! Here’s to the wisdom of age and the attitude of youth…may they forever be blended!
You are right that it is like coming full circle. What a great sense of wholeness you must feel in that way… Proud of you xx
Thank you Christy…full circle is nice!
