Last night…I became a member of Toastmasters…and…I knew…I would be called upon…for an impromptu speech…called a Table Topics…I mean…of course…they would want to know if I could…talk…
Anyway…I was a bit concerned…would I know enough about the topic of the day…could I think fast enough…should I hide in the restroom until the meeting was over…
Before I could make a mad dash for the ladies room…the topic was announced…tell a short story…each of the three speakers would draw a slip of paper containing…a person…a place…and…a thing…the goal being to make up a story using all three items…and make it last about two minutes…
I breathed a little easier…this smacked of one of my favorite activities…writing prompts…if called upon…I could do it…
And…I was called upon…my three items were…a truck driver…shopping mall…and…an alien…
If I do say so myself…I rocked it…quickly spinning a yarn about a truck driver named Bob driving across New Mexico…who secretly wanted to be abducted by aliens…in order to be on the cover of the National Enquirer…suddenly he saw bright green swirling lights…he thought it was his night…he followed the lights…getting more and more excited with each passing mile…until…he found himself in the shopping mall parking lot…surrounded by search lights…announcing the J. C. Penny’s Home Good Sale…
It was fun…everyone seemed to enjoy it…
Of course…Bertha…said it reminded her of my life in general…nothing is ever wasted…not even the things that I think I am doing…just for fun…in fact…especially the things that I am doing just for fun…will come back to serve me…another day…another way…
Hmmm…maybe I’ll do some fun things today…who knows when I might need them…

Hehe that’s a fun story you came up with on the spot! Good for you to step outside your comfort zone and join that group 🙂
Thanks, Christy…I think I’ve stepped so far out of my comfort zone that I’m going to have to get it a new zip code…not just by joining Toastmasters…but all the new things I’m doing! 😉
I remember when I first joined the Toastmasters. My first topic was easier… and I still flopped. I froze and nothing would come out of my mouth. But, they passed me and gave me a second chance. Before long they wished they hadn’t invited me… they couldn’t get me to stop talking. hahahaha
Congratulations! A fine group of people you will love!
LOL, Mary…did you bribe them with that famous Chocolate Cake? If I had had the topic from the week before I think I would have frozen…and it was a Bertha kind of question…tell about a time when someone went above and beyond the call of duty for you…of course after the meeting I had several examples…but I was glad I wasn’t selected that night!
I have a feeling they will ‘hear’ plenty from me, as well. I’m excited to become a better speaker and hope that Bertha and I will get some speaking engagements…she has new shoes she wants to show off!
I wish you were closer and we could attend together…how fun that would be! (((HUGS)))
