I just spent some time…this morning…playing on youtube.com…checking out some music videos from…the…day…when I came across a somewhat recent one…of James Taylor…as a real grown-up…sixty-something…with very little hair…singing one of my all-time favorite songs…You’ve Got a Friend…
It immediately takes me back…I’m seventeen…my boyfriend just gave me my very first cassette tape…Mud Slide Slim…by a long-haired…hippy looking…Sweet Baby James…I didn’t have my own player at the time…they were just coming out…so like a soda with two straws…we shared his…I’d keep it for a couple of days…and then he would…You’ve Got a Friend…was our song…life was good…
My…how times have changed…that ill-fated tape became twisted and gnarled so many years ago…that I don’t even recall its demise…like so many things from my youth…including that budding romance…
Bertha…points out…that regardless of how much hair James has today…how many pounds I’ve gained or wrinkles I’ve found…how many years have come and gone…with their ups and downs…the music is still as sweet…the melody…still takes me back…and the words still warm my heart…
Maybe getting older is alright…as long as I can still listen to the music of my youth…and…yes…of course…I do have it on iTunes…life is good…

Don’t you just love listening to those oldies and letting them take you back? Always a motivator and stress reliever!!
I do, Arlene…of course there are some that bring back bittersweet memories…but for the most part…I love it!
As Bertha would say, even the bittersweet have a place and purpose in our hearts. I have an “oldies” CD I made that I listen to every morning on the way to work. This is MY time to pump up and remember wonderful and even some not so wonderful times. I sing along as if I were Bonnie Rait herself. I know people passing think I’m possessed. Whatever. Music rounds us out and up. Especially da King! By the time I get to work, I’m saturated with memories, feeling good, and have a head song. Life IS good, and yes, I ain’t nothing but a hound dog.
Georgia…just because you both have red hair…doesn’t mean you sound like Bonnie…but then neither do I and I love to sing right along with her! Music is an integral part of my life…it is rare that I don’t have music playing in the background…thanks for sharing your memories and routines with me…ROCK ON!
Awe! Sweet James hehe I like that song too! How neat that music can take us back to our memories, good and bad ones too… Go YouTube! 🙂
And isn’t it neat that some songs stand the test of time…a lot of time… I’m glad to know that you like it as well. 🙂
