Two Years and Counting…

I’m celebrating today…it’s my friend’s birthday…but…that’s not why I’m celebrating…and…at our age…I’m not sure she is either…but regardless of birthday wishes…I’m celebrating my two year anniversary…

That’s right…two years ago today…I had posterior fossa decompression…due to Chiari I Malformation

I remember getting ready for the surgery…it was such a surreal feeling…I think the main thing was…not knowing what the outcome would be…not really even knowing what to expect…there isn’t a lot of medical information out there about what to expect following the surgery…

I think that’s because…they simply don’t know and can’t really predict…how anyone is going to do…it’s pretty individualized…and depends on the extent of nerve damage prior to surgery…and other co-existing conditions…so…they just don’t say…

So…that’s why I write about my Chiari experience from time to time…just in case there’s someone out there…who needs to read about it…

Honestly…from my instant gratification standpoint…it seems to have been a slow recovery for me…although I went back to work at three months…I honestly didn’t feel like it…and I struggled the two months I worked until summer vacation…

The next school year was better…but…I still didn’t feel that great…and by early summer…just before eighteen months out from surgery…I thought this was just gonna be the rest of my life…foggy brain…numb arm and face…frustrations and aggravations…

Then…suddenly…at eighteen months…things seemed to rapidly start getting better…the numbness improved…I had a great MRI…showing continued improvement…and…the fogginess was gone…

On the fogginess…it was the same time that I started eliminating processed carbs…yes…and sugar…from my diet…so…I can’t be sure…what helped…if it was just time…or…no carbs…but…the good thing is…feeling better is definitely a motivator to keep me following my new dietary lifestyle

Fast forward another six months…and it’s today…and…I continue to improve…my stamina is better…until a couple of months ago…exercise made me feel worse instead of better…I’m actually building up my sick days again…haven’t had to take one so far this year…

I did read somewhere that full recovery from the surgery could take up to five years…at the time I thought that was crazy…how could it possibly take that long…but…now…I realize…it is a slow process…but…like the tortoise…I’m winning the race

Not So Useless Facts…

I’ve been blogging for well over a year now…and I kind of enjoy looking back and seeing what I blogged about last year at the same time…interestingly…I find that the same themes show up at certain times of the year…regardless of the year…of course…Bertha…has her theories about that…but…that is a whole ‘nother blog…

Anyway…about this time last year…I did a post…True Confessions of a Middle-Aged Blogger…about disclosing something that you probably didn’t know about me…unless you were my Mama…and…you were the one who whipped me for stealing the belt when I was two…but…for some reason…I didn’t continue the thread…Bertha…said…today was the day…

So here we go…

I hate beets…there…I’ve said it…I know hate is a strong word…and if I reserve it for things I honestly hate…beets would be on the top of the list…I remember in grade school…I had a teacher who insisted that we clean our plate in the lunchroom everyday…and made that part of our Health grade…one day Mama came to have lunch with me…which was a rare treat in and of itself…but this day…we were having beets…and…she happened to like beets…so she ate mine…and those of a couple of the kids at the table with us…then…she stuffed several more servings into her milk carton…Mama was definitely the hero of the day…and we all got a good grade on lunch…

There was a time…probably between the ages of eleven and fourteen…that I was obsessed with the author Frank Yerby…he wrote what was considered to be trashy books back then…my favorite one was…A Woman Called Fancy…I reread it every summer…while thinking I was quite grownup…I just checked…I can get a used copy from Amazon…might just have to do that…I’m sure it isn’t trashy at all compared to the books of today…

Hmmm…my favorite all time movie…It’s a Wonderful Life…I love the message in it…how important each individual life is…and how much difference each of us makes…I’ve even written a chapter in my upcoming sequel…Becoming Berthaabout it…

My Daddy used to call me June Bug…because I was born on May 30th…almost June…thankfully it wasn’t a nickname that followed me around all my life…but it’s sweet to remember it…and I always think of him when I see June Bug written anywhere…

I have a sweet tooth…and…have almost never met a desert that I didn’t like…however…my all-time favorite is still…birthday cake (white with white icing) and vanilla ice cream…not sure why…but it’s my comfort food…when I’m really upset…it’s what I want…I’m sure…Bertha…will have me blogging about that in the future…but not today…

I’ve had a fairly ordinary life…I didn’t have an imaginary friend as a child…although…now there is…Bertha…I believe in aliens and ghosts…but have never seen either of them…of course…I’ve never seen…Bertha…either…and just try telling her that she isn’t real…

Speaking of imaginary…Pepper…was the cat in Bertha-Size Your Life!…she was just as haughty as she appeared in the book…and…I loved her…unfortunately…she crossed the rainbow bridge a few years back…and I haven’t gotten another pet…I did keep her in Becoming Bertha…I figured if I had an imaginary friend…I could have an imaginary cat as well…hey…it works…and no litter box to clean…

I started 2013…reading…Healthy Cheats by Skinny Chef Jennifer Iserloh…and being healthy…and at a healthy weight…is my top priority for the year…

So…now…you know a lot more about me than you’ve ever thought you needed to know…but…that’s where you’re wrong…in the not too distant future…all of this useless information…might just come in handy…who knows…
