Charge It…Please…

I’m doing something that I never dreamed I would do…I’m…charging…my books…and…no…I haven’t pulled out the plastic at the bookstore…although I have been known to do that…I’ve plugged in my Kindle…just to ensure I have plenty of battery life for later this afternoon…

Reading has definitely changed in the electronic age…I’ve had to…turn off…my book on an airplane…ran out of battery just at the good part…and ended up sitting close enough to an outlet so that I could read while plugged in…

And…while these situations wouldn’t occur with a paper book…and…they are annoying…there are so many things that I love about the Kindle…for one thing…unlike my jumbled bookshelves…it holds unlimited books…being a prolific reader…this comes in handy…and makes dusting a bit easier…

I also love the spontaneity of downloading…gone are the days…when I would watch Oprah…then drive 25 miles to the nearest bookstore to hopefully buy the book she’d convinced me would solve all my problems and make coffee in the morning…now…if she were still on the air…I could download the book and be reading it…as she spoke…how cool is that…

Then…there is the cost…most e-books are less expensive than their print counterparts…which only make sense…there are less costs involved in producing them…and many of the independent authors…as well as some of the more well-known ones…participate in free days from time to time…what can I say…I love free books…

Okay…e-books rock…I’m pretty hooked…but…there will always be a place in my heart for my paper books…especially what I call my reference books…one that I want to pull out and refer to from time to time…I find it easier to do that with a traditional book than…scrolling…so…my bookcase is still bulging a bit…well…a lot…and…that’s just fine…I wouldn’t want a house without a bookcase…

Bertha…says I could ditch the books…keep the shelves…and fill them with shoes…

I remind her that…she…is a book…and things suddenly get very quiet…hmmm…maybe we should have had this conversation a long time ago…

Is Amazon Confused?

I’ve confused a lot of people in my lifetime…by…not saying exactly what I meant…using body language that didn’t match my words…so…I guess it was bound to happen…at some point…I would confuse…Amazon

I didn’t mean to do it…it all started out fairly straight forward…I would order a book…or two…and…in a few weeks…they’d send me an email…with suggestions of other books that I might like…and…quite often I would like them enough to order a couple…then…Christmas came along…and my daughters sent me…Wish Lists…for their families…and…like a good mother…I ordered several items from each list…

So…I started getting emails…accessories that I might like for my Wii…which of course I didn’t have…and…then…books that only a son-in-law would read…and…all the latest…Curious George…and…Fancy Nancy…adventures…

But…even with that…it was manageable…I knew which books were mine…I knew which books were theirs…and the ratio that I ordered…mine versus theirs…meant they were mostly mine…

Then…about six months ago…I joined a writers group…and…many of the writers were offering their books as a promotional free download on Kindle…this helps their ratings…and…gives them kudos…for the number of downloads they have during that time…of course…we were encouraged…to download and promote their books…

At first…I struggled with the concept…Bertha and I have spent a lot of time…working on living my truth…and…honestly…many of the books…weren’t of a genre that I would read…or enjoy…I wanted to support my fellow authors…but…how could I promote them to my friends…when I wouldn’t read them…myself…

Bertha…gently reminded me…that my reading taste…is a bit…unusual…I prefer to say…eclectic…and…just because…I don’t read about vampires…or…steamy romances…or…a combination of the two…doesn’t mean…that…they aren’t the hottest genres around…

She…also said…that…I can promote a book…without…endorsing it…simply…by telling my friends…here’s a free book…and…let them look at it and decide if it interests them or not…hmmm…I could do that…and…I’ve had many friends thank me for passing along the links…

But…I also go a step farther…I download them…I mean…they are free…they don’t cost me anything…I don’t have to read them…if they don’t totally interest me…and…I’ve helped out an author…it seemed like a perfect win-win…

Except…

Except…for Amazon…and their formula…for…recommending my future reading material…so…now…I get an email…every so often…with some pretty obscure books…

Like…the following description…

Curious George…and…Fancy Nancy…are boxing on the Wii…when…they are attacked by vampires…unfortunately…the Man in the Yellow Hat…is in an alternate universe…involved in an erotic tryst…at the time…thankfully…a werewolf…comes to the rescue…destroying the vampires…and leaving behind…a copy of…the latest inspirational book…Bertha-Size Your Zombie!

Yep…I’m gonna download that one…just as soon as it’s…free…and…I’ll be sure to let you know…
