Reassure the Patient…

Assemble your equipment…reassure the patient…those were the first to steps of every nursing procedure when I was in nursing school…they could be done simultaneously…if the equipment was already in the patient’s room…

What I didn’t understand at the time…and what…Bertha…has been happy to point out to me…since…is that assembling the equipment…is part of the reassurance…

Nothing is more concerning to a patient…than a bumbling nurse…who keeps leaving the room because…she forgot something…

But…more than that…assembling the equipment…is reassuring to the nurse…gives her a nice run through of how the procedure is done…let’s her see it in her mind…just gets her ready…and who wants to waste a pair of sterile gloves…because they forgot to open something before putting them on…well…I may have done that a time or two…and it is quite frustrating

Anyway…I hadn’t thought of these concepts in a while…but…Bertha…brought it up to me in the gym this morning…I was doing a new routine today…I’d read it carefully…several times…when I got there…I started by assembling the equipment…grabbing the mat…picking out the dumbbells…changing the pulls on the machine…so…when I was ready for the next exercise…it just flowed…well…at least as much as it could flow since I’m still learning the techniques

So…I’m going through the process…and…Bertha…is sitting on a bench…doing her nails and watching…but…she reminded me of the old nursing procedures…saying that…they relate to so much more than nursing…or…even gyms…for that matter…

Hmmm…I contemplated that a bit…as much as I could and concentrate on the work at hand…and realized…that not only was she right…she’d managed to reassure me in the process…

Excuse Me…I’m Changing in Here…

The only thing that is constant is change. ~Heraclitus

Bertha…reminds me of this today…as I am contemplating…how the weight training program I’ve started is going to fit into my life…thing about it…it’s more than just a trip to the gym three times a week…it’s a total lifestyle change…eating differently…at different times of day…specifically to foster building lean tissue and burning fat…there’s stretching…and something called foam rolling to do on the other days…I had to order a foam roller…who has those things just lying around

Anyway…it’s a bit overwhelming…a bit intimidating…unfamiliar…unknown…even though…I’ve read about the approach before…I’ve never really been committed to it…

Bertha…says…it reminds her of when I got Maybelle from the pound…

Ahhh…yes…I remember…I’d been thinking about getting a dog for a couple of weeks…and…called the pound on a whim…they had a chocolate lab puppy…I rushed down…without passing go…without collecting $200…

Truth is…she was the first dog I’d had as an adult…didn’t know the first thing about training her…had no supplies…no toys…no puppy pads…no food…no dishes…no baby gates…nothing…

Anyway…Bertha’s…point was…although the first few days were a little hectic…and maybe even…shaky…in no time…we’d figured it all out…she’d been to the vet…she had food and water…she had toys…she was on her way to being house trained…and…then…we moved…and it all changed again…but…it all worked out…in a new way…and…these changes will as well…

Of course she’s right…the foam roller will come…the exercise routines will become…well…routine…the dietary changes will be second nature…and then…it will change again…but…it’s okay…I’ll be ready…
