Out of Hiding…

A few days ago…in anticipation of going back to work today…I updated my Jane CarrollFacebook status…with…I think I’ll hide under the bed…it was meant…and…taken as a joke…

There were fun comments…about dust bunnies and men with butterfly nets…and…Bertha…rousting me out of my hiding place…as well as offers of hiding at my friend’s house…and…a promise…by the school secretary…that she would come and get me…

So much for posting my plans on social media

But…although the post and comments had all been fun and games…Bertha…knew that there was a grain of truth in my post…I love summer vacation…I love not having strict structure in my day…and…I especially love not getting up quite so early in the morning…

So…she let me entertain the thought of…hiding…for all of about two minutes…before she pointed out…what life would be like…living under the bed

Of course she wasn’t being literal…we all know I won’t fit under the bed…rather…she was talking about…hiding from…AKA…avoiding…the things that aren’t exactly what I want…

She reminds me…that there is a gift in every situation…every circumstance…and that when I avoid the circumstance…I miss the gift…

Of course she’s right…there are many gifts that come with my job…there are the ones that I already know about…the kids…the hours…summer vacation…the great insurance program…it pays the bills…and…has a super retirement program…

But…she says…that I will receive many gifts this year…that I have not yet imagined…interactions…smiles…laughter…and…maybe…just…maybe…making a difference in someone’s life…I just have to be open…

Well…when she puts it like that…and since I really don’t like dust bunnies all that much…I’m dressed…I’m ready…I’m open…

Jane

Priceless…

It’s been a fun week at the beach…with my daughters and granddaughters…we’ve laughed…we’ve cried…I won’t say who did what…we’ve eaten good food…and we know a couple of places we won’t be returning to next year…

I’ve blogged some days…and some days…it just wasn’t in me…I wrote…and…rewrote the opening for a novel…I stuck to my crazy dietary restrictions…proving once and for all…I am stronger than a pop tart…or a cookie…or…any of the other delicacies that come with children…

I sat on the beach under a super moon…sparkling on the Gulf…and basked in its glory…I watched equally glorious sunsets over the bay…I took pictures of all of it…I made a video of the waves…which I think I’ll enjoy for years to come…

But…most importantly…I got a new name…Grammy Crackers…and that as…Bertha…says…is…priceless…
